Named after the Clackamas Native Americans, Clackamas County was created in 1843 as one of four districts determined by the Provisional Legislature. Originally the county stretched across a Canadian province and parts of four present-day states. Eventually, the northern boundary of the county became the Columbia River, and then in 1854, the county’s current boundaries were set. The county seat is Oregon City which was incorporated in 1844. During the time of its incorporation, Oregon City was the county’s primary urban center, though this is no longer true. Today the county encompasses not only Oregon City, but also the cities of West Linn, Rivergrove, Molalla, Happy Valley, Canby, Barlow, Wilsonville, Tualatin, Sandy, Milwaukie, Lake Oswego, Johnson City, Gladstone, Estacada, and Portland.
In addition to numerous cities, Clackamas County also encompasses four Hamlets known as Stafford, Mulino, Molalla Prairie, and Beavercreek. All of these lovely Clackamas County communities are excellent places to live in the Portland, Oregon, Metro Area. The county is bordered by Marion County on the south, Multnomah County on the north, Wasco County on the east, and Washington and Yamhill counties on the west. The county stretches over one thousand, eight hundred, and seventy-nine square miles and encompasses numerous rivers, the Bull Run Watershed, Mt. Hood National Forest, and Mt. Hood. Additionally, the county is home to some of the state’s most fertile farmland, especially in the areas around Molalla, Wilsonville, Boring, Sandy, and Canby. All of this contributes to the undeniable natural beauty of the county.
